Hafren Forest

Afon Hafren is the Welsh name for the River Severn. It’s source is a peat bog on the side of Plynlimon, but it quickly becomes a torrent with falls and cascades plunging through Hafren Forest, around 8 miles for Wye View.

There are a number of marked walks through the forest:

• The Cascades Walk is 1/2 mile and is wheelchair accessible by means of a boardwalk.
• The Severn-Break-its-Neck Trail is 1.5 miles and leads to the Severn Break its Neck waterfall.
• The Blaen Hafren Falls Trail is 3.5 miles and follows the Severn to Blaenhafren Falls.
• The Source of the Severn Trail is 8 miles long and leads to the source of the river on the side of Plynlimon.

In addition, The Severn Way, The Wye Valley Walk, Glyndŵr’s Way and the Sarn Sabrina walk all pass through the Hafren Forest.

The trails all begin from the car park in Hafren Forest, where you can also find toilets. From Wye View follow the A470 to Llanidloes town centre, then the brown signs for “Hafren Forest”.
