Gilfach Nature Reserve

Once a working hill farm, now it’s a spectacular nature reserve tucked away in the Marteg Valley. There are a number of marked walks along the river and around the valley, which take in the old railway bed, the waterfalls where you can see salmon leaping in autumn, the Welsh Longhouse farmhouse, an oak wood, archaeological remains, and The Monks Trod.

Getting there: turn left out of Wye View and follow the road for around five miles. The entrance to Gilfach is on the left, just where the road curves to the right. Cross the cattle grid and the Welcome Gateway is on the righthand side. The old farm and visitor centre is a further mile along the road on the right.

Address: Off the A470 Llangurig to Rhayader road, St. Harmon, Rhayader, LD6 5LF.
